2008 – International Year of Languages

The United Nations has declared 2008 the International Year of Languages. One of the main thrusts behind it is to get people to learn languages and make an attempt to communicate with others in their mother tongue. It is a way of making people feel well and at home and relieving their stress. By talking to others in their own language you help develop their sense of belonging and wellbeing and you build bridges. You can download the brochure of the intentions and rationale behind the International Year of L anguages from here .

  1. FYI, I posted a link to this entry on a list of blogs that mention IYL 2008. The site also has additional links, including to International Mother Language Day (Feb. 21), which will also be the “formal launching” of IYL.

  2. Thank you for that and thank you for the other information. 🙂

  3. fuguist says : I absolutely agree with this !
